If you have less than 620 LEDs per day you are rated poor, according to the latest data from the Institute of Statistics, unlike in 2021, where the risk of poverty limit was nearly 100 lek less.
INSTAT's calculations based on income and living level survey reveal that the poverty risk indicator is 20.6% in 2022, with a decrease of 1.4% year-on-year. But although there is an improvement in the figures, Albania still does not exceed the data of the Balkan countries and has a significant difference from the European Union average, which is 16.5%.
"The gap that exists between living costs and the level of average wages in Albania ranks us as one of the countries with the risk of being poor," said Romina Radonsic, economic expert.
More than 576 thousand Albanians are at risk of being poor and according to age groups, the most affected by poverty are pensioners.
'As we know the pension level is extremely low compared to the EU or the region. We have high living costs compared to the Balkan countries, where we rank second behind Serbia, which shows that pensioners can live in relative poverty, but let's say that their salvation has been remittances over the years, i.e. remittances of migrants" Radonsić.
But what solutions do economic experts propose to boost social welfare?
"By including more individuals in the social assistance scheme, perhaps this risk would be reduced," Radonsiqi said.
