Starting this Thursday, April 10, 2026, Albanian citizens traveling to Schengen Area countries will face new border procedures. The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs announces that the European Entry/Exit System (EES), a new electronic mechanism of the European Union, will enter full operation.

According to the official announcement, the EES system replaces the manual stamping of passports with the electronic registration of entries and exits for citizens of non-EU countries. This system has been in partial implementation since October 2025, and will now be fully applied in the 29 countries of the Schengen area.

Authorities indicate that the system will apply to short-term trips, up to 90 days within a 180-day period, without changing the existing residence rule.

Upon first entry after April 10, Albanian citizens will have their passport data, facial photograph and fingerprints recorded. Refusal to provide these biometric data will automatically result in refusal of entry into the Schengen territory.

The Ministry warns that in the initial phase of implementation there may be delays at airports, ports and land border crossings. For this reason, citizens are advised to report early for travel and ensure that their passports are valid and in good physical condition.

Meanwhile, it is emphasized that no prior application is required for the EES system, as registration is carried out at the moment of border crossing.

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs calls on citizens to be informed in advance about the new procedures and to plan their travels taking into account the additional time for border controls.
