A quarter of a century ago, the two brothers Artur and Arben Mëhilli were officially declared wanted by the Albanian justice system. In 2001, the Lushnja Court sentenced them in absentia to a total of 32 years in prison for the murder of a young man, Rezar Metaj in Lushnja in 1999. The event was pure revenge. In the previous year, 1997, the young man had killed their brother, Sokol Mëhilli, also in Lushnja, and had not yet been arrested by the police. Since then, and 25 years later, the two brothers have fled to Italy. With false identities, with their names changed to Artur Davidhi and Arben Gjermeni, the brothers from Lushnja started life in the neighboring country, also securing residence permits.
Their peace was shattered by a report from Italy that some family members related to them were living in an area, along with two people with suspicious identities. In the absence of fingerprints in Albania, one of the main scientific forms of identification, Interpol agents in Tirana managed to find old photographs of the two Mëhilli brothers. To prove that the wanted men were the pair who lived on paper in Italy, they used modern technology, “Facial Recognition”, and by comparing the features that remain similar, between the old photos of Artur and Arben Mëhilli and the photos that Italy sent of Albanians with other identities, it was concluded that they are the two people declared internationally wanted.
Artur was 33 years old when the murder was committed, while today in Italy he was put in handcuffs at the age of 60. His brother Arben was only 27 years old, today he is 54 years old. They were sentenced by the Lushnja Court to a total of 32 years for premeditated murder and illegal possession of weapons.
Sokol Mëhilli, their brother killed in '97, turns out to be the father of Stenaldo Mëhilli, the journalist who recently became famous with his participation in "Big Brother VIP", a show where he revealed the details of his father's murder when he was only 1 month old.
Following the arrest in the neighboring country, Albanian and Italian authorities are cooperating to finalize the extradition procedures of Artur and Arben Mëhilli to Albania, to serve their sentence.
