BBC report on Vlora Airport, Sazan and Zvërnec: How can a runway be built

The BBC has dedicated an extensive report to Albania, where journalist Emily Wither traveled to the country for an episode of the show "Assignment".

The focus of the documentary was investments in the southern area, including the islands of Sazan and Zvërnec, as well as Vlora Airport.

The report examines whether Albania can transform its reputation and attract luxury tourism, while mentioning well-known investors such as Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who aim to build tourist resorts.

The journalist emphasizes that Albania is a country with two realities: new buildings and villas intertwine with old blocks, dilapidated agricultural buildings, and half-built hotels.

While the city of Vlora offers beaches with stunning views, there is a clear contrast between the new wealth and the makeshift homes of local residents, showcasing the social and economic gap in the area.

Part of the documentary focuses on Vlora Airport, where construction continues with delays due to wet terrain and flooding.

Emily Wither highlights the difficulties in construction and the risks these conditions can pose for tourism projects. The journalist spoke to biologist Xhemal Xherri who told her that the area often floods, questioning the sustainability of large investments in infrastructure.

The report also highlights that the ghosts of Albania's communist past remain present: land disputes, corruption allegations and a lack of infrastructure could hinder the realization of planned resorts.
