The Thessaloniki Court of Appeal has ruled in favor of the extradition of a 53-year-old Albanian businessman to Albania, pursuant to an international arrest warrant issued against him by Albanian authorities on charges of money laundering.
The news widely reported by Greek media does not name the businessman, but it is suspected that he is Ilir Shtufi.
"The 53-year-old, who describes himself as a businessman, was arrested last month in Thessaloniki, Greece, pursuant to an international arrest warrant issued against him by Albanian authorities," The Greek Times writes.
During the trial, the defense of the wanted person stated that the accusation is unclear, claiming that Albania is seeking his extradition for political reasons.
" I have been an entrepreneur since 1994, managing over 20 companies in Albania, focused on the construction and energy sectors ," the 53-year-old said in his statement, citing data according to which he claims to be among the leading entrepreneurs in his country in terms of tax declaration.
"They accuse me of serving the opposition in Albania," he said, among other things, referring to "political persecution" against him, while expressing concern about whether there would be a fair criminal trial in his homeland.
Regarding the reason why he was in Thessaloniki (where he was arrested in a city hotel), he emphasized that he had come "for a party" and that until then he had not been aware that he was facing charges in Albania.
The Thessaloniki Court of Appeal accepted the Albanian request, giving a decision in favor of his extradition (the basis of the case and the charges against him in his country were not examined, except for fulfilling the conditions for extradition).
The 53-year-old has the right to appeal the above decision, so that the Albanian party's request can be re-examined by the competent criminal panel of the Supreme Court./ Kapital
