The Dutch police have prevented the hostage taking of the Belgian Minister of Justice Vincent Van Quickenborne, arresting 4 people as suspected perpetrators. The 'Ndrangheta and the Albanian mafia are accused of this event, as those arrested are suspected of being connected to the drug trafficking mafia in Northern Europe.

Foreign media reports that the botched kidnapping plot was discovered almost by accident by Dutch police, who last Thursday identified a car with Dutch license plates parked outside the Belgian minister's home, inside which were found: a rifle and duct tape, while in another car, also registered in the Netherlands, several bottles of gasoline were found.

Thanks to the two cars, investigators tracked down and arrested four people aged 20 to 48 in the Netherlands, all suspected perpetrators of the failed kidnapping and, at least according to Flemish broadcaster VRT, all suspected drug traffickers.

Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne himself, in a video message broadcast by the Belgian radio-television RTBF, commented on the event by talking about the "drug mafia".

"At the moment I will be under constant surveillance and will not be able to participate in some planned activities in the coming days. It's not pleasant, but it's understandable,” Quickenborne said.

"Let me be clear! The people behind all this are getting the opposite of what they intended. This strengthens my belief that we must continue to fight", he continues. "We will continue to fight organized crime, with more people and resources than before. In our democratic rule of law, we will never stoop to violence. Never!".

Quickenborne's words were joined by those of Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, who from his Twitter profile speaks of a "completely unacceptable" threat.

"The presence of the mafia in the Amsterdam-Brussels axis becomes more and more evident and with the failed kidnapping of the Belgian minister, it becomes more dangerous, brazen."

For several years, Belgium, supported by the neighboring Netherlands and the port of Antwerp, has become one of the most important access routes through which drugs can enter Europe, in fact, according to data published by the Europol report "Cocaine Insight", in the port of Antwerp, 66 tons of cocaine were seized last year, compared to five in 2013.

A continuous increase, favored by the consolidation of criminal activities carried out by both the 'Ndrangheta and the Albanian mafia, both increasingly rooted in Belgian territory and responsible for increasing murders and episodes of corruption in the police force. This has led some foreign media to allude to the involvement of Albanians in collaboration with Italian mobsters in this failed robbery.
