The Microsoft Detection and Response Team (DART) was engaged by the Albanian government to lead an investigation into the attacks on government systems on July 15, 2022. Immediately after the hackers were detected in the system, the Microsoft team was engaged in recovering them and repelling the the attack.
Microsoft estimates with high confidence that on July 15, 2022, Iranian government-sponsored actors conducted a devastating cyberattack against the Albanian government, disrupting government websites and public services. In fact, the American company's article mentions two journalists from Albania, Gjergj Thanasi and Olsi Jazexhi.
"There is some additional evidence that the role of these individuals extended beyond simple social media amplification and content production. One of the people who repeatedly posted Homelan Justice content had previously written for the now-defunct IRGC-affiliated American Herald Tribune and other news sites, often in negative terms about the MEK.
Meanwhile, a second character account may have attempted to contact at least one Albanian newspaper prior to the hack, seeking "cooperation" and the ability to publish with the media. The parallel promotion of the Homeland Justice campaign and its central themes by these individuals and persons online, both before and after the cyber attack, adds a compelling human dimension to the broader Homeland Justice impact effort," Microsoft's report said.
Newsbomb.al has received a reaction from the journalist Olsi Jazexhi himself. The latter says that he is an investigative journalist who deals with the investigation of the "criminal activity" of the mujahedin in Albania and that they have nothing to do with the Homeland Justice hacker group.
"Thanks to your suggestions and guesses, on September 7, 2022, the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, performed an unprecedented act in the modern history of Albania. He broke diplomatic relations with Iran, deposed the staff of the Iranian embassy, broke the Vienna Convention and violated the headquarters of the Iranian embassy in Tirana and used the anti-terrorist police to abuse and mistreat the diplomatic staff of a foreign country," says Jazexhi.
Furthermore, he says that together with his colleague Gjergj Thanasi, who was in Iran a month before the hacking, as can be seen in the photo published by the American company that investigated the cyber attack on government systems, they were only doing their duty as journalists.
"For the above, we want to emphasize that Olsi Jazexhiu and Gjergji Thanasi are two investigative journalists who have been investigating the criminal presence of the Mujahideen in Albania since 2016. We have investigated and been interviewed by Western and Iranian media such as: The Guardian, the Independent, Al - Jazeera, Channel 4, New York Time, BBC, Press TV, etc. and many local media and we have exposed and will expose the criminal, terrorist and illegal activity of the Iranian Mujahideen.
We have witnessed the mistreatment, human rights abuses, blackmails against the media, businesswomen and state officials in Albania that the MEK has committed.
We have done and will do our duty to investigate the criminal activity of the Mujahideen in Albania, we will be interested in protecting the freedoms and human rights of the hostages that the MEK keeps in its paramilitary camp in Manze, and we strongly reject any attempt to stained our work. We are not affiliated with Iranian security organizations or Homeland Justice hackers. We condemn with contempt the criminal allusions you have made against us", Olsi Jazexhi says, among other things, in his reaction, which we are reflecting in full below.
