A tragic event occurred on Friday morning in San Donà di Piave, near Venice, where a 42-year-old Albanian woman lost her life after being hit by a garbage collection truck while walking her 9-year-old daughter to school.
The victim is Lavdije Isteri from Durrës, a mother of three. The accident occurred shortly before 08:00, at the intersection of Passarella and Paolo VI streets. According to Italian media, the truck was turning right onto a secondary road when it hit the 42-year-old, who died at the scene.
The horrific scene unfolded in front of her 9-year-old daughter. According to witnesses, the minor was a few meters ahead of her mother and had already crossed the street, which prevented her from being involved in the accident.
Emergency crews and firefighters immediately arrived at the scene, who used a crane to lift the truck in an attempt to extract the woman, but nothing more could be done for her.
"I was walking my children to school when I saw many mothers running towards the end of the road. When we arrived, we saw the tragedy. Fortunately, the girl was a little ahead of the mother and had crossed the alley," said a mother who was near the school.
The incident has shocked the entire community. At Marco Polo Elementary School, students did not go out for recess, while parents left in shock after class ended.
The truck driver is in a state of shock. Local police have launched investigations to clarify the circumstances of the accident, while the event has brought back to the attention of the Italian media the issue of the safety of heavy vehicles circulating in urban areas and the danger created by blind spots during maneuvers. According to the Italian media, the truck was an older model, equipped with additional mirrors, but without the most modern safety systems.
