The Iranian Mujahideen

The Mujahideen movement, what many in the West consider the Iranian opposition, may be the only group and movement within Iran more hated than the Ayatollah's regime itself.

Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon official and expert on Middle East affairs, Saudi Arabia and Iran, lists five main reasons why the Mujahideen lack popularity.

First, he classifies history. MEK was alongside Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, as one of the most important forces of the Islamic Revolution, a decision that many people today consider as their historical mistake.

Second, terrorism. Before the Islamic Revolution, the group targeted Americans, killing several military officers and businessmen. After the MEK lost to the Ayatollah in a post-revolutionary power struggle, they turned their terrorism towards officials of the new Iranian regime, often killing innocent bystanders in bombings.

Third, betrayal. In 1980, says Ruben, Iraq did not attack the Iranian regime, but the entire country. Ordinary Iranians, most of whom were unsympathetic if not hostile to Khamenei, fought for their country. They did so because Saddam Hussein's war intentions went beyond regime change, but only to capturing and annexing Iran's oil-rich Khuzistan province. At the height of the war, the MEK made an alliance with Saddam Hussein.

Fourth is ideology. Iranians love democracy, Ruben says. The MEK may talk about democracy, but the group's ideology centers on a strange mix of Marxism and Islamism. Many Iranians want Western-style freedom, the MEK, in contrast, continues to sing anti-American hymns.

Fifth, is group behavior. The movement acts as a cult isolated not only from the societies of the countries where they have taken refuge, but also from the Iranian diaspora itself. They raise their children cultivating this cult.
