While Italy, Greece and other countries in Europe are alarmed by the K variant of the AH3N2 influenza virus , Albania continues to see an increase in the number of respiratory infections.

According to the Institute of Public Health, 13,500 cases have been reported over the last week, but the number of infected people is expected to be higher, as not everyone goes to the doctor.

"From 12,000 cases last week, this week we have 13,500, so there is an increase," said Dr. Rovena Daja.

The K variant of the influenza virus has not yet been isolated in the laboratory, but the arrival of immigrants and the numerous movements for Christmas and the end-of-year holidays do not rule out its presence in our country.

This situation has led to an increase in the number of patients in hospitals, some with more serious complications.

For this reason, epidemiologists advise, in addition to vaccination, the use of masks:

"There is no room for panic, but people with chronic illnesses, over 65 years old, as well as young children should be vaccinated and wear masks. We are tired of masks, but they protect us from the flu, RSV and COVID," said Dr. Rovena Daja.

The complications of the new flu variant appear to have affected Albanians' approach to vaccines.

Public health experts are calling for vaccination, as it curbs hospitalizations and helps the flu pass with mild symptoms./ tch
