The dismissal of Erion Veliaj from the position of mayor of Tirana is expected to be finalized today by the Council of Ministers, which will meet at 12:00.

The meeting comes a day after the Prefect of Tirana officially informed them about the proposal approved by the Municipal Council. According to the law, it is the government that makes the final decision in this process.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Municipal Council merged the Socialist councilors' request for Veliaj's dismissal with that of the Democratic Party and Endri Shabani, approving it with 50 votes in favor.

Veliaj has objected to the procedure followed, hinting that he may appeal to the Constitutional Court. Article 115 of the Constitution provides that, if an appeal is filed within 15 days, the decision of the Council of Ministers is suspended. This act would block the holding of elections in Tirana.

However, Prime Minister Edi Rama is proceeding with the logic of a fait accompli. A day earlier, in a meeting with ministers and deputies of the Tirana district, alongside mayoral candidate Ogerta Manastirliu, Rama considered the decision to dismiss Veliaj as mandatory.

The Prime Minister stated that Tirana cannot rise and fall like a "body without a head" and citizens cannot coexist with a "municipality with its head severed," adding that the opposition will enter the race for the capital city defeated.

Veliaj has been in custody since February 10. SPAK has closed the file against him and sent him to trial, with 13 charges, of which corruption in 9 cases. Veliaj has led the Tirana municipality for 10 years, or two and a half terms, since 2015.
