IGJEO explains to the citizens about the earthquake reporting: It has two stages

The Institute of Geosciences has explained today why during the recent earthquake in Bosnia and Herzegovina a high magnitude was reported and then changed to a smaller magnitude.

The quake in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was felt from Albania to Croatia and Italy, was previously reported with a magnitude of 6.0 which then dropped to 5.7. But IGJEO says that this is a normal procedure of their work and that reporting is done in two stages, the preliminary and the final.

IGJEO announcement:

Taking into account some reports on some portals, we clarify that:

IGJEO has the task to report accurately, but above all, in the fastest possible time the localization and magnitude of any seismic event with impact!

From the National Center for Seismic Monitoring, magnitude reporting is performed in two stages, the preliminary rapid one and then the final assessment. Preliminary evaluation is performed by the rapid system and there may be a change in value from the final evaluation. In any case, the magnitude is not corrected, but re-evaluated by the staff on duty, to give the final representative value! This procedure is an international standard for the field of seismology!

In the first announcement on the IGJEO website, the term "preliminary" was placed, which means that the event is being re-evaluated and the parameters are subject to change.

Thank you for understanding!
