A hearing of the special parliamentary committee against disinformation made public for the first time the details of the Iranian cyber attack.
The director of AKSH, Mirlinda Karçanaj, was invited to give information to the deputies and was informed by the chairman of the commission, Erion Braçe, that the meeting would continue behind closed doors, which seems to have made her speak freely. But the services of the Assembly seem not to have understood that they had to close the signal to the media and the confidential testimony was made public.
"We had no idea what attack we were in the first few days. On the 16th the team's goal was to infect all backends managed by AKSHI which were over 10,000 at the time, which means encrypting all these backends, including computers. So out of 10 thousand backends, only 250 managed to be encrypted", said Karçanaj.
The backend is the systems on which AKSHI functions, that is, the online platform for providing services to citizens, and according to Director Karçanaj, the aim of the Iranians was their total deletion, including the documentation stored on the servers.
"They were very difficult moments, we had no idea who we were facing, and we had a disorganized state on the other side, which we were building while dealing with the process, they demanded by their right to continue our daily work. Even if services were not online, the attack aimed to wipe out all the state's systems, so we went back to the stone age where citizens had no data. We managed to isolate everything at that moment, and according to two reports, only 10% of systems and data were managed to be hidden by adversaries".
The Albanian state's response to this attack came thanks to the cooperation with the US Embassy in Tirana, which brought in support from one of the best FBI teams.
"The best Microsoft team was involved and with the support of the American embassy, the political advisor of that time, they came physically to do the investigation. The idea was to understand what had happened and to attribute the attack that happened near AKSH. This was the moment that the American embassy once again supported us with the most prepared cyber team of the FBI. They worked for a month on the analysis, coming to exactly the same conclusion."
As the director of AKSHIT continued to provide this information for more than 10 minutes, her staff informed her that it was still live on the website of the Assembly, which caused her to request the interruption of the signal and the commission continued the sessions behind closed doors.
