Lynching, hate speech, and violence seem to be gaining more and more ground every day among protesters in Tirana.
In an unprecedented move, a journalist was physically and verbally assaulted yesterday in the square in front of the Prime Minister's Office by a group of protesters, while reporting and covering their rally.
Top News journalist Keida Muka was reporting live to the general public when some citizens began pushing and dousing her with water. Not even the cameraman accompanying journalist Muka was spared from the aggressive and senseless reaction of the protesters.
The Journalists' Association of Albania also reacted to the serious incident, issuing a public statement condemning "the physical attack and obstruction of the performance of duty against Top News journalist Keida Muka during her live reporting from the citizens' protest".
"No journalist should be subjected to violence, threats or intimidation because of their work. Attacks on journalists constitute a serious violation of media freedom and the public's right to be informed.
AGSH reiterates that the right to protest is a fundamental democratic right, but it cannot be turned into an excuse for attacks on journalists and media teams who are on the ground covering events.
We call on protest coordinators and all participants to respect the work of journalists, regardless of their attitudes towards the media.
"We also ask the authorities to identify the perpetrators of the incident and take the necessary legal action," the AGSH response states.
