Renowned lawyer and activist Dorian Matlija has reacted to recent developments in the civic protest, emphasizing that he remains part of it, but clearly distancing himself from individuals who, according to him, are trying to represent or lead the protest without any mandate.
Matlija states that she is and will remain part of the protest for the protection of nature, the Vjosa-Narte area, flamingos, transparency, as well as against corruption, state capture and the arrogance of power.
However, he underlines that, precisely to guarantee the success of the protest, he distances himself from "the microphone and self-proclaimed representation", emphasizing that no one has the right to speak on behalf of the people just because they have taken a microphone or created an organizational group.
"The people speak for themselves, with their massive presence in the square, with their choir, with their banners, with their songs and with their dignity," he says.
The lawyer also criticizes what he calls "institutional fantasies of constitutional illiterates," distancing himself from ideas about imaginary assemblies, patriotic secretariats, arbitrarily proclaimed technical governments, and initiatives that, according to him, are not based on legal or constitutional logic.
Matlija also condemns any act of violence during protests, emphasizing that he distances himself from the use of eggs, stones, broken glass, conspiracy theories, and any action that gives the government an alibi to delegitimize the civic cause.
He admits that for a period he chose to remain silent so as not to create division, but adds that this silence has allowed some people to behave as if they "own" the protest.
He emphasizes that he does not distance himself from the protest, but only from those who, according to him, are trying to take him hostage and harm him.
According to Matlija, the protest should return to citizens, to the protection of nature, to flamingos, to mass participation, humor, creative banners and to a clear political demand for the resignation of the government, while ending with the message: "The people are the only protagonist. Everything else is noise that intentionally or unintentionally serves the government."
Statement by lawyer Dorian Matlija:
I am and will remain part of the civic protest. I am in this protest for nature, for Vjosa-Narta, for flamingos, for transparency, against corruption, against state capture and the arrogance of power.
Because I want this protest to succeed, today I clearly distance myself from:
The microphone and self-proclaimed representation. No one has a mandate to speak on behalf of the people just because they have grabbed a microphone, climbed a ladder or created a WhatsApp group. Protest does not need self-proclaimed faces. The people speak for themselves, with their massive presence in the square, with their choir, with their banners, with their songs, and with their dignity.
The institutional fantasies of constitutional illiterates dressed in patriotic flags. I distance myself from imaginary assemblies, patriotic secretariats, invented technical governments, lists announced without legal logic, and demands that confuse desire with the Constitution.
Any action that gives an alibi to the government. I distance myself from eggs, stones, smashing, violence, conspiracy theories, and any behavior that turns protest from a civic cause into a caricature or an alibi usable by the government.
For many days I was silent, like many others, so as not to disrupt the protest. But this silence, mine and that of many others like me, gave ground to those who today behave as if they own it. Now is not the time to be silent, because this very silence is letting the protest and all its energy of the overwhelming majority of protesters go to waste. Such a historic moment will not come again for a long time.
I refuse to draft, draft articles and legal technicalities for the vague ideas of those who proclaim themselves ideologues, heroes and faces of the protest, while others use them as notaries of their confusion. I can defend arrested protesters, whoever they may be, to guarantee them due process, respect for procedural rights and protection from any state abuse. But the legal protection of a protester does not mean approval of the method, action or political delirium displayed by a certain segment or group.
At no point do I distance myself from the protest. I only distance myself from those who are trying to take it hostage and are intentionally or unintentionally harming it.
The protest must return to where it was strongest, to the citizens, to nature, to the flamingos, to the massiveness, to the humor, to the banners full of fantasy, and to the clear political demand for the resignation of a criminal and arrogant government.
The people are the only protagonist. Everything else is noise that intentionally or unintentionally serves the power.
