The death of Albanian actor Gjergji Lala at the "Umberto I" Polyclinic in Rome has led to the opening of an investigation by the Italian Prosecutor's Office, following a complaint filed by his family against the hospital where he was treated.
According to the 78-year-old's family, the actor died without receiving the necessary medical attention, a claim that has led Italian authorities to register proceedings for the criminal offense of "negligent homicide."
"Our father died before our eyes, without anyone doing anything to help him," the family's statement reads, according to Italian media.
At the moment, there are no people under investigation. The Rome prosecutor's office is expected to analyze the autopsy results to determine the exact causes of death and decide whether there will be criminal liability against medical personnel.
According to reports, the actor had arrived at the hospital in critical condition, after previously being treated for serious health problems, including kidney complications and surgery for a bladder tumor.
During his stay in the hospital, his condition became further complicated, including a fractured femur and bacterial infections, including Klebsiella, which, according to Italian media, significantly weakened his body.
Family members claim that the deterioration was due to a lack of proper medical care, while the investigation will determine whether there was negligence during treatment.
Gjergji Lala, born in Lushnje in 1947, was a renowned Albanian actor and director, with a long career in theater and film. He is best known for his role as Mihal Gramenos in the film “Liri a sedreti”, as well as for his participation in international productions such as “Don Matteo”, “House of Gucci” and “Gangs of New York”.
Italian authorities are expected to continue their investigations following the results of forensic examinations, which will determine whether his death was related to natural complications or possible medical negligence.
