Assassinations, cocaine and the "English" of the Çapjas: The
Bled Muca

He had twice survived an assassination attempt and now thought he was safe in his apartment in Aartselaar, Belgium, just a few dozen meters from the police station. Until there, too, men appeared in the alley in front of the house.

Six shots later, Bled Muça was dead. Professionally executed.

So wasn't this man just an ordinary shoplifter, caught with, among other things, a box of condoms at the Carrefour supermarket in Schoten?

Portrait of the "ATM" of an Albanian gang

It is Saturday evening, January 22, 2022, just before eleven o'clock, on Baron Van Ertbornstraat in Aartselaar. In almost all the apartments, the window shutters are down. The street is quiet.

A few dozen meters away is a police station. Then shots are heard. A neighbor hears about six shots, one after the other in rapid succession. At first he thinks they are fireworks. Then he sees someone running towards a car waiting a little further away.

“The man was carrying a gun,” the neighbor told HLN at the time. “Not a handgun, but something that looked like a semi-automatic weapon.”

The car speeds away. A car is parked in the driveway of the apartment building, and Bledar Muça is standing next to it.

A neighbor goes to him and calls the emergency services, but Muça no longer shows any signs of life. He has a bullet wound to the head.

Initial findings leave little doubt: Muça was ambushed while returning home in his car.

"This is a professional settling of scores in the criminal world," said prosecutor's spokesman Kristof Aerts shortly after the incident. It is a deliberate and unprecedented execution: the first bullet hits Muça immediately in the head.

And that's what makes the case so strange. In Belgium, he has very little legal knowledge. A few years ago, he was convicted of shoplifting.

Nothing more. Who was the silent “Englishman” who apparently had to die at all costs?

"The Englishman" on the first floor

A search of Belgian databases reveals almost only one file. In December 2018, Muça was caught together with three other people committing a robbery at a Carrefour in Schoten.

Under their clothes are found cell phone accessories, tubular keys, light bulbs, and a box of condoms, worth a total of about 600 euros. The four do not appear at their trial and are sentenced in absentia to four months in prison.

A petty thief, that's what it seems. Even to his neighbors in Aartselaar, Muça is primarily "English": a friendly, calm man who speaks mostly English and reveals very little about himself. In the early days, according to the neighborhood residents, he drove a car with English license plates. That's how he quickly got his nickname.

Muça rents an apartment on the first floor, on the left side of the building, from the local church institution. HLN managed to see inside it. Anyone expecting a luxurious abode will be disappointed. Two bedrooms facing the street, a small living room, a simple kitchen and a balcony at the back.

White walls, few decorations. Nothing indicates that here, among the elderly, lives a man who would later be linked to millions of euros and international cocaine trafficking.

"He always paid his rent on time," the church said. His neighbor at the time remembers a regular man. "Always well-dressed, with a smart shirt and pants, and very polite when you saw him. He would greet you, but otherwise, I hardly ever saw him."

It wasn't about a luxurious life. No flashy sports car, no excessive display of wealth.

No one knew what he did for a living. When a neighbor asked him about it, he would only reply that it was “something temporary.”

Family from Dubai

However, there was regular movement around him. Almost every day, in the afternoon, someone would come to pick him up in a car. Sometimes he would leave on foot with a man to go to a nearby restaurant. The neighbors did not know who the visitors were. “They were always men and they seemed to be of the same origin,” they say.

His family did not live with him permanently. According to a neighbor, his wife and two children stayed in the apartment for about two weeks during the Christmas holidays. They reportedly came from Dubai. After that, Muça was alone again.

He lived for months almost unnoticed among his elderly neighbors, just a few dozen meters from a police station and very close to Antwerp and its port.

This is where the Belgian part of his story starts to get more interesting. According to Albanian investigative journalist Artan Hoxha, Muça came from Dubai to Belgium and followed the activities of his network from Antwerp.

"In this particular case, the cocaine entered through Antwerp," says Hoxha. "A large part of it was going to England."

According to him, Muça was suspected of being involved in receiving cocaine from Latin America and its further distribution. Other Albanian media also place Muça, as of 2021, clearly in Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Hoxha also tells of an earlier, extraordinary episode, which he says was never officially reported. About five months before the murder, a car in which Muça was traveling was followed.

Bankomati i klanit

Gazetari investigativ Artan Hoxha e quajti madje “bankomatin” e klanit.

A few months later, another plan was drawn up in Albania. Muça was to be lured into a conflict and during the clash he was to be shot in the head. Then it was to be made to look like he had acted in self-defense. The opposing side waited for him for hours. Muça did not show up. Once again he escaped.

But when he later settled in Aartselaar, according to Albanian investigators, the hunt for him was not yet over. Between January 13 and 17, 2022, his location was discovered. During a meeting in Brussels, the address was given to the suspected executioners. Then the surveillance began.

On January 17, 18 and 19, according to the file, men from the group appeared around the apartment building on Baron Van Ertbornstraat. They observed Muça's apartment and movements.

On January 20, Sergej H. and Ledio Z. travel to Nieuwegein in the Netherlands. There they buy a GPS tracker. A day later, at around 03:50 in the morning, it is placed under the car in which Muça was traveling. That same evening, a final observation is made.

Less than 24 hours later, Muça drives into his yard. This time he doesn't escape.
At the crime scene, investigators find sixteen 9 mm shell casings. He was shot with two different firearms.

Six bullets were removed from Muça's body. The forensic pathologist reconstructed sixteen bullet trajectories.

Still no sentence

The getaway was also planned. Witnesses saw a Toyota RAV4 with a yellow license plate driving away. It turned out to be a cloned Dutch license plate. The car was parked in the opposite direction of traffic, ready to leave immediately.

After the murder, the Toyota goes to Koekelberg, where it is left in a previously rented garage. The whole plan seems to have been prepared down to the smallest detail.
But who was behind this operation? Who gave the order, who paid, who provided the means?

Ultimately, there is still no answer from the justice system.

Meanwhile, several suspects have been arrested during the investigation, including Sergej H. On February 12, he was extradited to Albania.

But so far no one has been convicted for the murder of Bled Muça.

According to the file, the Çela brothers were in charge of the day-to-day running of the criminal organization. They are suspected of having given the organization members the order to find and kill Bled Muça. They are also suspected of having provided the executioners with money, weapons and other means.

Thus ends the life of a man who was barely noticeable to his neighbors in Aartselaar, but who in Albania had been on the radar of justice and rivals for years.

He had survived two assassination attempts, until his enemies found him thousands of kilometers away./ HLN
