The Albanian, Ylli Vangjelaj, has fallen into the hands of the Greek police, after he was wanted by the Italian authorities on the charge of murdering a sex worker in December 1999.

The 48-year-old originally from Vlora was arrested yesterday evening in Ioannina, as part of the request of the "SIRENE" department in Italy issued on July 21, 2021 for the criminal offense of "murder-serious injury".

The Court of Appeal in Bologna had sentenced Vangjelaj to 22 years and 8 months in prison in June 2011, a sentence which was followed by a final decision in October 2012.

Ylli Vangjelaj was announced as wanted by the Italian authorities after it is accused that, in collaboration with two other Albanians, Robert Ziu and Erjon Sejdiraj, kidnapped and killed the 20-year-old prostitute Betty Ramirez , originally from Ecuador, on the banks of the Po in Mortizza , on December 9 of the year 1999.

In July 2018, Vangjelaj was arrested in Albania following the request of the Italian police.

Based on media reporting at the time, the Italian decision to sentence him to prison was recognized by the Court of Vlora, which initially sentenced him to 23 years in prison, and then reduced the measure by sentencing him to only 12 years.

However, it is not known how Vangjelaj ended up free again, as Italian authorities issued another arrest warrant in 2021.

During the arrest in Albania, it was said that he had two identities, Ylli and Fatmir Vangjelaj, while the Greek police stated that they arrested him under the identity of Ylli Vangjelaj and that he was the holder of an Albanian passport with this name issued on 19.10.2023.

Ylli alias Fatmir Vangjelaj immediately fled to Albania after the murder, where he had changed his identity. It had received the baptismal name of the older brother and the birthday of the younger sister.

Becoming a different person, he returned to Italy where he stayed in Chieti where he married and had a daughter, but he never gave her his last name. The investigations of the Italian authorities did not stop even after almost 20 years, insisting to the Albanian counterparts to find the real identity of the murderer of the prostitute.

The other author, Robert Ziu, was arrested in the USA in 2006 and sentenced to 23 years in prison, and Erjon Sejdiraj, who was the true leader of the gang, was arrested in Belgium, a country where he was accused of fraud and falsification of documents, as a convict in absence with life imprisonment for murder in Italy.

The crime, which occurred in the context of prostitution, was intended to be a test of the strength of the three Albanians to the detriment of the gang that dominated at that time in Piacenza.

By kidnapping Betty Ramirez and demanding a ransom from the young girl's owners, they could prove their worth.

The brutal murder greatly disturbed the public opinion because of the ruthlessness of the killers and above all because of the criminal depth and the context of the struggle for supremacy between gangs of prostitutes.
