Two Albanian boys, who are cousins to each other, have been sentenced to prison by the High Court in Playmoth, after they were arrested and accused of two cannabis farms.

Cousins Fatmir Kurmekaj (34) from High Wycombe and Fatjon Kurmekaj (36) from The Crescent, Plymouth, were convicted of a number of offences, including driving without insurance and a licence.

Sentencing the two Albanians, Judge Robert Linford said they were stopped by police on the A38 motorway as they were heading towards Plymouth on August 26, 2021, raising suspicions because of their attitude about the itinerary they were about to undertake.

A number of keys were recovered from officers during the physical search who, following proactive investigations, discovered two properties in Mutley and Keyham which had been converted into cannabis farms.

In a previous hearing, the prosecution, while reading the facts, proved before the judge that in each of the two properties the officers found not only cannabis plants, but also two Albanian immigrants.

They were identified as Teslim Muhmutag, who was sentenced to 7 months in prison, and Adrian Kurmekaj, who was sentenced to 30 months in prison.

During an earlier hearing, the prosecutor told the court that parts of a floor and ceiling between the two flats had been dismantled to allow the whole house to be used for growing plants, while a staircase connected the two properties.

Also, from the investigation of the phone records, it was concluded that the two cousins had been in constant contact with each other, as well as with other people involved in the operation.

Judge Linford found that the profits from the criminal activity could run into tens of thousands of pounds. He noted that cell phone records showed they were the point of contact for the people involved and for those buying the cannabis.

Judge Linford noted that while Fatmiri had no previous convictions, Fatjoni was sentenced in 2015 to 30 months in prison for cocaine trafficking and in 2017 to 16 months in prison for cannabis trafficking.

Taking into account the degree of involvement of both in criminal activity, the judge sentenced Fatmir and Fatjon Kurmekaj to 45 months in prison each.
