Extradition of Fatjon Gjonaj

Fatjon Gjonaj was arrested and extradited from the United Arab Emirates to Italy. The operation, coordinated by the Milan District Anti-Mafia Directorate, began with Gjonaj's location in Dubai and ended with his arrival at Fiumicino airport at 6:15 pm, after a long period on the run that began in December 2024.

Currently, Fatjon Gjonaj was immediately transferred to prison, now at the disposal of the Milan Prosecutor's Office.

According to information published by the Italian media, Fatjon Gjonaj's return to Italy is the result of a complex international investigative activity. The investigation, launched by the Milan Flying Squad and coordinated by the Antimafia District Directorate, began after an ambush on 12 April 2019 against Enzo Anghinelli. In relation to that event, the authorities had already obtained a first-degree conviction for the suspected instigator and material perpetrator, but the investigations led to the discovery of a wider criminal scenario.

Criminal activity

For Italian justice, Gjonaj is at the head of a criminal association aimed at international drug trafficking, in particular cocaine and cannabis. The evidence of his involvement, the Italian authorities have provided through the encrypted messaging platforms, Encrochat and SkyECC. The last time the Italian media wrote about him was in December 2024 when the Police had put 19 people in handcuffs, as part of an operation against Milan's "ultra" fans, but most of whom were accused of links to the mafia.

The leader of the Milan ultras, Luca Lucci, was accused of being the leader of the group, a role he shared with the Albanian Gjonaj, who at the time was reported to have fled to Spain. But apparently, like many other Albanians, in an attempt to escape justice, he had headed for Dubai. However, what he had thought seems to no longer hold true, as the "Dubai fortress" has long since fallen, as the UAE country has begun to make extraditions on behalf of foreign authorities. Even in Albania, there have been some extradited from Dubai who have been brought to our country to face justice.

Milan ultras, but also traffickers

After the December action, the judge in the case, Fabrizio Filice, said that the investigation had concluded that Lucci, in collaboration with Gjonaj, gave instructions to the gang members, many of whom are part of the world of Milanese ultras fans, to ensure the success of the illegal activities. They had discovered everything from conversations on the "SkyECC" application, which took place from June 2020 to March 2021. Lucci carried the pseudonym "Belvaitalia", while Gjonaj was known by the nickname "Don Bobi". The group was organized so that Lucci would stay in Italy, while the Albanian lived in Spain, was a resident of Malaga and from there took care of the delivery of the drugs. The drugs arrived from Spain mainly by trucks. While the smaller deliveries (15-20 kilograms) were organized directly by Lucci with 'Amazon couriers', hiding drug packages among other deliveries. Among the projects was the transport of drugs by helicopters, eliminating intermediaries, as well as the exploitation of truck drivers who were organized fans of Curva Sud. In addition to drug trafficking, the group had also ordered a murder. For this event, 52-year-old Daniele Cataldo was arrested, who was the author of the attempted murder of Enzino Anghinelli in 2019, a crime that was ordered by Lucci./VOICE
