The London court has already ruled in favor of the extradition of 4 people suspected of the murder of businessman Ardian Nikulaj in April last year in Shëngjin.
Among the suspects who will be extradited to Albania is British citizen Harriet Bridgeman.
In the assassination attempt, she had the role of observing the businessman's movements, camouflaging herself as a tourist in Nikulaj's hotel. In relation to the latter, her lawyer has revealed several claims as to why she should not be extradited and face Albanian justice.
Top Channel journalist Muhamed Veliu has secured the statements before the court of Saoirse Townshend, lawyer for Harriet Bridgeman .
The main argument given was that Bridgeman will face inhumane conditions due to the lack of adequate medical infrastructure.
"There is a real risk that the applicant will be subjected to inhuman conditions and treatment due to the lack of appropriate medical equipment, and that these conditions will be oppressive because of her health problems. In my view, the judge erred in finding that there was no real risk of a violation of Article 3; he wrongly recorded that her PTSD was not complex and that her depression was moderate, not severe. This underestimates the seriousness of the illness, which has direct consequences on the treatment needed and whether Albania can provide such treatment. Bridgeman suffers from complex PTSD and moderate to severe depression," Bridgeman's defence stated at the hearing.
The lawyer further argued that the Albanian penal system, in particular the Tirana prison hospital, is not equipped to provide the necessary mental health care for Bridgeman:
“One of the mainstays of treatment for this type of disorder is speech therapy, and for someone who is a British citizen and does not speak a word of Albanian, her mental state is likely to deteriorate significantly during her imprisonment in Albania. It will be very difficult for her to communicate how she is feeling, or what she may be intending to do with herself, if she cannot express herself properly to prison staff. Since her daughter has been living with her since April, there have been no further suicide attempts — if she is extradited, this protective factor is removed and the risk of suicide will increase. In any event, there is not enough information to show that the necessary measures are in place, especially as she is a British citizen, does not speak Albanian and will not be assisted by prison staff who do not speak English,” the lawyer said.
The murder of Ardian Nikulaj
Nikulaj's murder followed several other criminal events that are still unsolved.
In July of this year, Nikolin Lekstakaj was executed in Balldre, Lezha, while on December 4, Etjan Nikulaj, the son of Ardian Nikulaj's uncle, was executed by a hail of bullets while he was driving his ML SUV on the Lezha-Milot road.
The main line of investigation into these events is that of the blood feud between the Nikulaj and Lekstakaj tribes.
Ardian Nikulaj was executed inside his bar in Shëngjin, Lezha, when Portuguese Saraiva, wearing a diving suit and a camouflage vest, entered and shot him several times with a pistol, leaving him dead on the spot.
Five people are accused of being involved in his murder, the mastermind Edmond Haxhia and three Britons: Thomas Mithan, Steven Hunt, Harry Simpson and Harriet Bridgeman.
The person who shot was identified by police as Ruben Saraiva.
The latter managed to flee the country after the incident, only to be arrested in Morocco. From there, he was extradited to our country in December 2023.
