The martyrs who gave their lives, forgotten. The graves destroyed and nameless

On the 81st anniversary of the Liberation of Tirana, the Cemetery of the Martyrs of the Homeland appears in a degraded state.

Cracked tiles, fallen letters, missing names, and damaged sidewalks permeate the entire memorial space, presenting a stark contrast to the cemeteries and memorials of foreign soldiers in the capital, which are clean, well-maintained, and filled with greenery.

The situation at the Tirana Martyrs' Cemetery

During the field verification, it was noted that many of the tombstones are cracked, while in dozens of cases the letters of the names or the years of birth and death of the martyrs are missing.

The surrounding sidewalks and courtyards also show visible damage, while the lighting is damaged in some areas.

Some martyrs' graves are completely nameless. According to the authorities, these belong to martyrs transferred after the 1990s, but the placement of identification data has not yet been completed.

The last serious maintenance intervention was made about 6 years ago, a period in which only a small number of tombs were reconstructed with new marble slabs.

Meanwhile, the cemeteries of foreign soldiers shine!

The British soldiers' cemetery, where 46 members of the British missions killed in Albania during 1943–1944 are buried, is clean, with fresh wreaths and well-maintained spaces.

Of the 2,400 soldiers killed or missing in Albania during World War II, about 1,800 are known by name. The names of the fallen are inscribed on eight granite columns.

The German soldiers' cemetery near the Artificial Lake, where 56 World War II soldiers are buried, is well-maintained, with clear names carved on granite columns and periodically cleaned up. Of the 2,400 soldiers who died or were missing in Albania during World War II, about 1,800 are known by name. The names of the fallen are inscribed on eight granite columns.

A memorial has also been established in Tirana in honor of the 251 victims who opposed the coup attempt in Turkey.

The memorial has been standing in Tirana's Grand Park, near the Artificial Lake, since 2019. On a concrete slab are engraved the names of 251 fallen soldiers who contributed to the failure of the July 15, 2016 coup in Turkey against the government of President Erdogan.

This memorial was damaged once, but it has been repaired and is currently in very good condition. The 251 names of Turkish martyrs are written in clearly legible letters.

Parks and Recreation Agency Response

Enkelejda Pashalliu, specialist of the Theme Memorial Parks in the Municipality of Tirana, openly admits the problem, claiming that there has been no intervention for many years. This is also due to the lack of funds to restore the sidewalks and place names and numbers on the graves. However, she claimed for Fiks that with the new budget they will carry out emergency restorations. Regarding the contrast between the cemeteries of our martyrs and those of foreign countries, the specialist said that with the 2026 budget they will try to make the cemeteries of our martyrs "shine" just like those of foreign countries. /Fiks Fare
