Astrit Hysenaj , 54 years old, on the third day of the floods in Durrës , had left for work, but was found lifeless in a drainage canal, in the area of ??the former military unit near Plepave.
Family members are saying their final goodbyes amid strong suspicions that he lost his life in the line of duty, cleaning the canals, contrary to what the Municipality of Durrës claims, which is that he was not at work when the water flow took him.
Klediana Bërsheni , the 54-year-old's granddaughter, recounts that her uncle left for work at 5:00 a.m. like any other day, despite the family's insistence that he not go due to the situation created by the bad weather.
Until 10:30, when Hysenaj finished his official work hours, the family was not worried, but after he did not return home, they filed a police report and immediately began their own search.
Bërsheni: Uncle left for work as usual at 5:30, during working hours. He saw the situation and the situation, the family tried to stop him. He left until the moment he finished work at 10:30, we didn't feel any concern, the concern started after he didn't show up at home. We waited a few hours and started searching as a family, because of the situation. We saw that he wasn't coming and filed a complaint with the police, it's 24 hours that we had to wait. We started searching ourselves, we saw from the cameras that until 08:25 he was working at the first pedestrian overpass when coming from the Plepa-Durres axis. After that he was not seen again.
More detailed details are recounted by the uncle's son, Osman Hysenaj, who says they have security camera footage showing the 54-year-old's last moments before the floodwaters swept him away.
"After that, there is no information, no one who saw him. It was around 8:30, on the camera footage, if you look at him, the water was up to his knees and he was still collecting the papers that were above the water and throwing them in the trash. We suspect that these were his last moments. Until the last moment of his life, he was on duty. If anyone has footage after this hour, please make it available to us. He was working and collecting the papers and throwing them in the trash," said Hysenaj.
"And the place where it was found, it fell into a small canal in the area where it was last seen and the flow of water takes it out exactly in the area where it was found. Its figure cannot be muddied," says Bërsheni.
