Xi Jinping and Joe Biden

The President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, has called the President of China, Xi Jinping, a dictator, while attending a fundraising event in California.

This statement by the US president comes a day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with the Chinese leader in Beijing for talks aimed at easing tensions between the world's two superpowers.

Xi said some progress had been made in Beijing, while Blinken added that both sides were open to more talks.

The spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning, reacted to this statement, calling Biden's comments "ridiculous".

"The relevant statements from the US side are extremely ridiculous and irresponsible, they seriously violate the basic facts, diplomatic protocol and political dignity of China. They are an open political provocation", said Ning, writes rel.

Biden, at the fundraiser on the evening of June 20 local time, also said that Xi had been embarrassed by the incident of a Chinese spy balloon being shot down by the US.

"The reason Xi Jinping was so upset, as far as when I dropped that balloon with two boxes full of spy equipment inside, was that he didn't know [the balloon] was there," Biden said.

"This is a great embarrassment for dictators. When they don't know what happened," the US president added.

Blinken's visit to Beijing - the first by a senior US diplomat in almost five years - restarted high-level communication between the two countries. Both Biden and Xi hailed the meeting as a welcome development. But Blinken made it clear that big differences remain between the two countries.

Washington and Beijing have long been at odds over a range of issues, including trade, human rights and Taiwan.

But relations have worsened especially during the past year. Now that the US elections are approaching, tensions with China have become a political issue. Some Republican senators have criticized the Biden administration for taking a "soft" stance on China.
