Submarine Atalanta

Hopes for finding the Titan submarine that went missing with five people aboard about 900 miles off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on Sunday have come and gone.

Marine search teams from the US and Canada have so far been unable to track down the submarine. A French ship Atalanta, sent by the French Institute of Naval Research, has set out to search for the missing submarine. This is the only submarine that can reach a depth of 6000 meters.

"Atalanta" can dive to a depth of 6,000 meters with a crew of three and is one of the few guided submarines in the deep sea. There are three wide-angle viewing windows and LED headlights that provide a direct view of the seabed.

A dive of this particular submarine can last up to eight hours, six of which can be spent working on the seabed.

The search for the tourist submarine Titan, which went missing during a mission to the wreck of the Titanic, has been underway since Monday, about 900 miles off Cape Cod on the Atlantic coast.

On Monday, OceanGate Expeditions confirmed the pilot diver was missing, while contact with the five people on board was lost about an hour and 45 minutes after she sank on Sunday.

A French government official confirmed that among the five aboard the tourist submarine is 77-year-old French explorer Paul-Henri Narzolet, director of underwater research at the company that owns the rights to the sinking of the Titanic.

Although two days have passed since the disappearance, the Coast Guard estimates that there are still 40 to 41 hours of oxygen on board the ship. The way in which the submarine will be extracted if located is also considered a challenge.
