The decision of the Special Court in The Hague for the former leaders of the KLA has caused numerous reactions in Kosovo and beyond.
American analyst Paul Williams, in an interview for "Opinion" in, commented on the sentences that amount to 81 years in prison in total.
Williams criticized the way in which, according to him, the court has operated and raised questions about the handling of war crimes cases. He stated that the Kosovo Government should consider the possibility of abolishing the Special Court through constitutional amendments.
According to Williams, such a move should also be considered due to the consequences that the court's decisions could have on the stability of the region.
Paul Williams : What happened is in the wake of Europe's efforts to have equality between Serbs and Albanians. I think if the Americans knew, they would have nothing to do with this court. It struck me how great efforts are being made to establish guilt. I think the Kosovo government should abolish this court.
Looking at how the court has acted, I think these should be the next steps. No Serb was convicted, not even for serious sexual crimes. Now is the right time for Kosovo to say “Stop”. Kosovo can change the Constitution to abolish this court. Serbian criminals will feel empowered by this. The decision will add fuel to the fire for Serbs and create instability in the region.
