Sergio Ramos' 'Panenka' to forget

Sergio Ramos was the negative protagonist in Monterrey's Rayados defeat to Toluca. The former Real Madrid legend's team lost 6-2 in the Liga MX match and missed the chance to take the lead in the standings: in addition to the team's difficulties, the Spanish defender missed a penalty when the match was 0-1 and would have deepened the lead for his team.

The former Real captain's 'Panenka' ended up in the hands of the opposing goalkeeper, who anticipated the shot and stood motionless in the center of the goal: an unprecedented embarrassment for Sergio Ramos, who has always been a penalty kick specialist.

Sergio Ramos attempts a 'panenka', but is surprised by the Toluca goalkeeper

Sergio Ramos and Rayados had started the big match against Toluca well and were leading 1-0 thanks to a goal by German Berterame when in the 20th minute a penalty was awarded to the Monterrey team: the Spanish defender appeared at the penalty spot and attempted a 'Panenka', a signature shot, convinced that the goalkeeper would jump to one side or the other. The problem was that the Toluca goalkeeper did not move and found the ball in his hands without much difficulty.

Within less than 15 minutes Monterrey found themselves at a 3-1 disadvantage and the match was irretrievably compromised: the final score of 6-2 makes clear the importance of that episode and how the match could have changed.

Even Anthony Martial's entry in the second half was not enough to shake up Monterrey, who with a win could have taken first place in the standings, while the first stoppage in the championship since mid-July allowed Toluca to catch up in second place.

After two games without a win against title contenders, Sergio Ramos' Rayados will look to find victory again in the next match, scheduled for Saturday, against Santos Laguna to try to get closer to the top.
