Before becoming the coach who led Spain to victory at EURO 2024, Luis de la Fuente went through a difficult period in his career. In 2013, after being sacked by Deportivo Alavés, he was left without a job for 18 long months, and little did he know that a small advertisement in a newspaper would change his life forever.
One morning, while reading the newspaper, De la Fuente saw a job advertisement from the Royal Spanish Football Federation, which was looking for a coach for the youth teams. He decided to call Iñaki Sáez, a name familiar to him from the time they had both worked at Athletic Club.
Sáez, former coach of the Spanish national team from 2002 to 2004, advised him to apply and send his CV. After several interviews, De la Fuente was initially hired on a temporary basis, but this was the starting point of a journey that would lead him to the football elite. Thirteen years after that newspaper advertisement, the 65-year-old coach has become one of the most important figures in Spanish football. He led La Roja to the 2024 European Championship title and is now aiming for another major success, the World Cup.
His path to the Spanish federation was a gradual climb. He first managed Spain's U19s, then the U21s and the Olympic team, before taking charge of the senior national team in 2022, following the departure of Luis Enrique. During that time, De la Fuente has built an incredible track record of success. He won the U19 European Championship in 2015, the U21 European Championship in 2019, the Olympic silver medal in Tokyo 2020, the Nations League in 2023 and then EURO 2024 with the senior team.
Today, his Spain are considered one of the strongest teams in the world. With a 36-match unbeaten streak, La Roja have regained the confidence and ambition to triumph on the biggest stage.
The next challenge is Belgium. In Los Angeles, Spain seeks to secure a place in the World Cup semi-finals and continue the story of a coach who once sought work through a small newspaper ad, while today writing big chapters in international football.
