Egypt has openly accused FIFA of rigging the World Cup in favor of Argentina after their incredible upset in the round of 16. Zico and the Egyptian national team coach have denounced the alleged conspiracies on camera, while the federation has filed a complaint to open an investigation into referee François Letexier, who they say favored the Argentines with his decisions. According to the Egyptians, the integrity of the tournament has been compromised and there has been no shortage of theories to support the idea that the competition was rigged to give the trophy to Messi again, as in 2022.
Although the complaint was filed after the match, there is no evidence to support the allegations. However, many people have listed all the most controversial episodes of this World Cup, which in recent days has been accompanied by major controversies, starting with the suspension of Balogun's disqualification after direct intervention by Trump.
Once again, fingers are pointed at Gianni Infantino, who his critics claim has already "carved" Argentina's name on trophies.
Accusations against Argentina after the match with Egypt
Let's start with the most recent case, the one that fueled the theory that FIFA manipulated the World Cup to give Argentina victory. The first to speak was Zico, the Egyptian striker, who publicly accused Infantino: he ironically congratulated the Albiceleste on the final triumph and spoke about the refereeing injustices suffered by his national team, which until the 80th minute was leading 2-0. He was joined by coach Hassan, according to whom it is a question of "marketing and money", especially linked to the figure of Messi. Arguments for this thesis are mentioned as the cancellation of the Egyptian goal by VAR and especially the lack of awarding a penalty for an interference with Salah in the action that later led to the decisive goal of Argentina.
Other conspiracy theories
From here, accusations of a manipulated and pre-planned World Cup erupted strongly. Supporters of these theories claim to have found other “signs” in previous matches. The first is the lack of a red card for Messi in the challenge against Algeria for a tackle on Mandi, very similar to the one that led to the exclusion of Balogun (later suspended), an episode that referee Marciniak did not even signal as a foul. This was the first case that raised doubts, although a single episode cannot support such accusations.
A few days later, the controversy was fueled by Infantino's statements, which many said presented him as biased. After Argentina's difficult victory over Cape Verde in the 1/16 finals, the FIFA president declared to an Argentine media: " Tonight I suffered for Argentina ." A sentence that was interpreted as an open positioning, although he later clarified that he was speaking as a neutral. Another detail that has fueled discussions is related to France, which against Morocco will be judged by a trio of Argentine referees.
FIFA has appointed Facundo Tello, despite the great rivalry with the French that dates back to the 2022 World Cup final. For many, this has been a controversial decision, although France has not made public complaints, especially considering that the referee is known for his harshness and holds the record of 10 red cards in a single match, set four years ago.
The Qatar 2022 precedent
All of these episodes have fueled theories that the World Cup was rigged in Argentina's favour, but it is not the first time such allegations have been made. The closest precedent dates back to Qatar 2022, when the Albiceleste eliminated the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. It was a very tense match, where Argentina came from 2-0 down to 2-2 in the final minutes, before triumphing on penalties amid controversy, provocations and a near-avoided brawl. A few months later, the then Dutch coach, Van Gaal, used words similar to those of Zico on television: " When you see the way Argentina scored their goals and how we scored, and the fact that some Argentine players crossed the line without being punished, then I think it was a fixed match."
When asked if Messi should have been world champion, he replied without hesitation: “I think so .” Even then, he implied that the World Cup was rigged to give Argentina the trophy. These are the same accusations that Egypt makes four years later: the script remains the same and, for conspiracy theorists, the recent episodes are simply another part of a pre-written tournament. However, there is no evidence that FIFA actually rigged the competition to favor Argentina and lead them to a second consecutive title.
