From Pioli to Gattuso and De Rossi, who will be the new Italy coach after Ranieri refused

A WhatsApp message overnight, addressed to FIGC president Gabriele Gravina, has completely changed the plans of the Italian Federation and the president himself, who has suddenly faced a "no" from Claudio Ranieri to take on the role of new Italy coach instead of the fired Luciano Spalletti: "I don't feel it."

And now what happens? It is the question that all Italian fans are asking, worried about the fate of the national team after the defeat in Norway that has already compromised the path to the World Cup. Everyone, including president Gravina, was convinced of Ranieri's acceptance, to keep the dual duty between Roma and the national team.

He had an agreement with the Friedkin family, but then Ranieri had a regret, respecting the trust given to him by the yellow-red ownership for the club's revival, started with the choice of Giampiero Gasperini as coach. And so, the names for the successor to technician Spalletti are now not many, considering that in recent weeks almost all the free coaches have found work, above all Allegri.

Pioli in pole position

Stefano Pioli now returns to be the first choice as he was the plan B if Ranieri failed, but in the background there are other names, some surprising, such as the return of technician Roberto Mancini. But it is not excluded that, even with the support of the head of the Italian delegation, Gigi Buffon, one of the former world champions of Italy 2006 is taken into account: above all Gattuso and Fabio Cannavaro.

Pioli was on the notepad of FIGC president Gravina despite his contract with the Arab club, valid until June 30, 2026, but with an option for an additional season and with an annual salary of 12 million euros. The current coach of Al Nassr, however, can only break this agreement to accept a return to Italy at the head of the national team. The prestigious role of national team coach is difficult to refuse. Fiorentina, still looking for a coach after the departure of Raffaele Palladino, had also thought about his return, but for the moment nothing has been concrete, and neither the Federation seems to have taken significant steps towards it. This is why hypotheses are gaining ground for one of the former Azzurri champions in Germany in 2006 as the next national team coach.

Mancini hypotheses, but also Cannavaro, Gattuso and De Rossi

Roberto Mancini's return seems difficult but not impossible. Relations are not great, especially after the clash that occurred with the resignation of the former coach to lead the Arab National Team. But in a recent interview, Mancini admitted that he had made a serious mistake. And so other names come to the fore.

It is not impossible to think of a middle ground between Fabio Cannavaro, Gattuso or De Rossi, even though they are still considered not fully ready for a weighty role like that of Italy's rise at this moment.

The same discussion applies to a hypothesis related to Bernardo Corradi with the help of former defender Leonardo Bonucci, both currently in the U-20, as well as Alberto Gilardino, highly regarded in the environment, but the same discussion applies to him as to his former teammates on the 2006 World Cup-winning national team.
