Manchester United are to sack Ruben Amorim, ending his 14-month tenure as manager. He was informed of the decision on Monday as the club released an official statement.
According to Sky Sports, Amorim met with club officials this morning to inform them of his departure. The Portuguese has already said goodbye and left United's training ground. Darren Fletcher will take over as interim manager of the Red Devils.
"With Manchester United currently in sixth place in the Premier League, the club's board has regrettably decided that the time is right for a change. This will give the club the best chance of achieving the highest possible position in the Premier League," the statement said.
British media emphasize that his dismissal does not come as a result of the team's competitive image, but as a consequence of yesterday's dramatic press conference given by Amorim after the 1-1 draw with Leeds.
"I know my name is not Conte, Tuchel or Mourinho, but I am the manager of Manchester United and I will remain in my position for at least the next 18 months or until the board decides otherwise.
"I have no intention of resigning. I will continue to do my job until someone else comes to replace me. I am here as a coach and every department of the club must fulfill its obligations," he stressed.
The Portuguese's last game was a 1-1 draw with Leeds on Sunday, a result that left the Red Devils sixth in the Premier League table after 20 games. Ruben took charge of the club in November 2024 and led the team to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao in May.
