More goals than ever before are guaranteed. The 23rd FIFA World Cup 2026 will, in fact, include 40 more matches than any previous edition.
One thing that is not certain is which player will score more goals than anyone else. FIFA has considered the 10 players with the highest chances of winning the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot.
Kylian Mbappe - France
56 goals in 98 international matches
12 goals in 14 World Cup matches
Group I opponents: Senegal, Iraq, Norway
If Thierry Henry and Olivier Giroud were 30 and 36 respectively when they became France's all-time top scorers, Mbappe is expected to do so at 27. In addition to scoring 39 times in his last 49 appearances for Les Bleus, the French forward averaged almost a goal per game for Paris Saint-Germain and is doing the same for Real Madrid. The World Cup Golden Boot, with France teammates Rayan Cherki, Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Michael Olise expected to provide him with assists, looks very much within reach.
Harry Kane - England
79 goals in 113 international matches
8 goals in 11 World Cup matches
Group L opponents: Croatia, Ghana, Panama
Could Kane become the first player in history to win the Golden Boot twice? The 32-year-old has averaged more than a goal per game in the Bundesliga since joining Bayern Munich in 2023 and is fresh from his fifth calendar year in the last nine seasons in which he has scored at least as many goals as he has played for England. Kane will also benefit from the support of the likes of Jude Bellingham, Eberechi Eze, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka.
Mikel Oyarzabal - Spain
25 goals in 53 international matches
0 World Cup matches
Group H opponents: Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay
The Eibar player was not among the 25 favourites two years ago. Now only two players lead the 29-year-old in the list of frontrunners. Aided by the fantasy of Pedro in midfield and Lamine Yamali and Nico Williams in attack, Oyarzabal has scored 13 times in his last 13 appearances for Spain.
Erling Haaland - Norway
55 goals in 50 international matches
0 World Cup matches
Group I opponents: Iraq, Senegal, France
Haaland's numbers are extraordinary. Last October, he became only the sixth player in history - and the first in 53 years - to reach 50 international goals in fewer than 50 games for Norway. The powerful forward also scores regularly for Manchester City. Haaland, with Oscar Bobb, Antonio Nusa and Martin Odegaard supplying him with the ball, can score against anyone.
Lionel Messi - Argentina
117 goals in 199 international matches
13 goals in 26 World Cup matches
Group J opponents: Algeria, Austria, Jordan
One of the greatest scorers in football history will turn 39 during the World Cup finals, but he is still scoring regularly. Messi has scored 35 times in his last 37 games for Argentina and continues to break the scoring record with Inter Miami. Surprisingly, the Golden Shoe of this competition is one of the few awards that has eluded Messi, who is one of only two players to score more than six times in a single edition and not win it.
Cristiano Ronaldo - Portugal
143 goals in 226 international matches
8 goals in 22 World Cup matches
Group K opponents: Democratic Republic of Congo, Uzbekistan, Colombia
The all-time leading goalscorer in international football is still in his prime. The 40-year-old continues to break goalscoring records with Al Nassr and has scored 25 goals in his last 30 appearances for Portugal. Ronaldo is scoring heavily under coach Roberto Martinez. With Francisco Conceicao, Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leao, Pedro Neto and Bernardo Silva and the quality they possess, Ronaldo will be relied upon to make his best return to the World Cup.
Lamine Yamal - Spain
6 goals in 25 international matches
0 World Cup matches
Group H opponents: Cabo Verde, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay
The Barcelona winger could break the record for the youngest Golden Boot winner, which James Rodriguez held the record for, having won the award a day after his 23rd birthday in 2014. Yamal is best known as a creative player, but his long-range strikes are deadly.
Ousmane Dembele - France
7 goals in 59 international matches
0 goals in 11 World Cup matches
Group I opponents: Senegal, Iraq, Norway
Dembele, at club level, has evolved from an electrifying winger to a devastating striker, scoring 55 times for Paris Saint-Germain over the past two seasons. However, with the untouchable Mbappe operating in the heart of France, Dembele is likely to be positioned on the wing.
Vinicius Jr. - Brazil
9 goals in 49 international matches
1 goal in 4 World Cup matches
Group C opponents: Morocco, Haiti, Scotland
The 25-year-old, given his position and relatively poor scoring record compared to the others, is a surprise candidate. However, Vinicius has broken the 20-goal mark for Real Madrid in each of the last five seasons.
Raphinha - Brazil
11 goals in 38 international matches
0 goals in 5 World Cup matches
Group C opponents: Morocco, Haiti, Scotland
Dangerous from the wings, the attacking midfielder has scored 55 goals in 90 games for Barcelona since the start of the 2024/25 season. Raphinha is likely to take Brazil's penalties and some free kicks.
