The 2026 World Cup is underway, what you need to know about the opening ceremony

The 2026 World Cup, the largest edition in history for the number of participating teams, is now just around the corner. The opening ceremony will take place in 3 different countries in 2 days and the protagonists will, as always, be the host countries of the event.

FIFA announced that a total of 900 people will be involved in organizing all of this. The organization of the opening ceremony has been entrusted to Balich Wonder Studio, a Milanese agency specializing in the creative design and planning of large events of this type. The agency is headed by Marco Balich, who previously worked on the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Program

The dates to mark on your calendar for the start of the event are; June 11 in Mexico and June 12 in Canada and the US.

June 11, Mexico

Venue: Azteca di Città del Messico Stadium

Time: 11.30 local time (19.30 in Europe) 

Guests: Shakira with Burna Boy for the official song "Dai", Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, Danny Ocean, J Balvin, Lila Downs, Los Ángeles Azules, Maná and Tyla. 

Opening match: Mexico-South Africa - 13:00 local time - 21:00 in Europe

June 12, Canada Canada

Venue: Toronto's BMO Field

Time: 13.30 local time (21.30 in Europe)

Guests: Alanis Morissette, Michael Bublé, Alessia Cara, Elyanna, Jessie Reyez, Nora Fatehi, Sanjoy, Vegedream, William Prince. 

Match: Canada-Bosnia Herzegovina – 15:00 local time- 23:00 in Europe

June 12, USA

Venue: SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles

Time: 16.30 local time (00.30 in Europe)

Guests: Katy Perry, Future, Anitta, LISA, Rema, Tyla (and others not yet announced)

Match: USA-Paraguay – 18:00 local time- 02:00 in Europe

Fun fact: Shakira becomes the first and only artist in World Cup history to have created and performed the official World Cup anthem in two different editions. After the super success of Waka Waka in 2010 at the South African World Cup, she returns with the song Dai Dai for the 2026 edition.

Moreover, this is currently the only time that the opening ceremony will be held in 3 cities; in all other editions when the World Cup has been held in two countries, this ceremony has been held in only 1 stadium. This formula may be re-proposed in 2030, the 100th anniversary edition when the matches will be played in 6 countries; Spain, Portugal, Morocco and one match each in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay to pay homage in honor of the first edition.

And finally, with this edition, the Azteca Stadium in Mexico becomes the first and so far the only one in World Cup history to host 3 opening ceremonies; 1970, 1986 and 2026.
