Lazio footballer Ciro Immobile was involved in a road accident in Rome. He was driving his vehicle when he collided with a tram between Piazza delle Cinque Giornate and Ponte Matteotti.
From the images, it appears that the off-road car type 'Land Rover' has been completely destroyed. Ciro Immobile escaped the accident without serious injuries, only shoulder pain. Immediately after the accident, Immobile said the incident was caused after the tram ran a red light.
He was with his daughters in the car when the crash happened around 8:30am. His car ended up in front of the tram at the intersection. The footballer and the girls were saved by airbags while the tram derailed due to the impact. The girls were taken to the hospital after being frightened by the strong impact.
The driver and 2 passengers were injured. According to the Italian media, the witnesses also say that the tram ran a red light.
According to some, there is a problem in the synchronization of the traffic light systems at the intersection. Investigations are ongoing by the city police.
"I saw the car hit the tram right in the middle," said one witness.
