Controversial episode in the 61st minute of the match between Real Madrid and Juventus, held at the “Santiago Bernabeu” for the third week of the single group stage of the 2025–2026 Champions League. Referee Vincic's decision for Brahim Diaz's interference with Khephren Thuram, a few minutes after the advantage goal scored by Jude Bellingham (which decided the final result in favor of Xabi Alonso's team), has raised many doubts among both fans and analysts.
Brahim Diaz's intervention on Thuram in Real Madrid-Juventus
The former Milan player slid towards the Frenchman in an attempt to snatch the ball from him in midfield. Brahim Diaz entered clearly late, with his foot up and the toe of his boot pointing towards the Juventus player's ankle, hitting him completely, but without seriously damaging him. A dangerous tackle, which could have caused a serious injury to the black and white midfielder.
Referee Slavko Vincic, well positioned and with a clear view, chose the yellow card, to everyone's surprise. There was no VAR call, even though the episode seemed worthy of a review for violent conduct. What saved the 26-year-old Moroccan was the on-field assessment by the Slovenian referee, who apparently considered the intensity of the contact not high enough to warrant a red card.

"Interference with a raised foot, it was for red"
Television footage clearly shows the dangerous nature of the collision. Even Giampaolo Calvarese, an analyst for Prime Video, criticized the referee's decision: "Brahim Diaz took a lot of risks. He kicked with his foot raised above his ankle, in my opinion it should have been a red card," — was the immediate comment of the former Italian referee during the broadcast of the match from the "Bernabeu".
Immediately after the episode, Thuram was left lying in pain and was replaced a few minutes later by Conceicao, a sign that the blow, although fortunately not strong from the Real player, had left consequences on the French midfielder's ankle.
The anger of Juventus fans
Social media erupted with reactions from black and white fans — and not only (many in Spain also pointed out the referee's leniency towards Brahim Diaz) — convinced that Real Madrid had benefited from a clear arbitrary favor: "It's part of the usual filth against Juventus," someone wrote. Others accused the referee of being "lenient towards big clubs" and emphasized that "in Madrid, everything is allowed."
The contrast between the severity with which similar fouls are punished in other matches and the lightness shown in this case sparked controversy. For some, the episode may have even influenced the outcome of the match, which ended with a 1–0 victory for Real thanks to a goal by Jude Bellingham.
Juventus leaves the Bernabeu with regret
Despite a solid match in terms of play, Tudor's Juventus returned from Madrid with another defeat and a seven-match winless streak — the worst record since 2009. From the "Bernabeu" challenge, the missed chances by the black and white attackers (especially those of Vlahovic and Openda) and the intervention of Brahim Diaz, which could have changed the course of the match, remain in memory.
