A red card in the final minutes of Getafe–Elche, a match valid for the 14th week of La Liga, was directed from the home bench by referee Alejandro Hernández Hernández. But not to coach José Bordalás, a member of his staff or any excessively noisy player on the bench. On the contrary, to Enrique Mejuto González, a former referee with a long career in Spain and on the international stage and currently Getafe delegate. The reason? He had not properly managed the group of ball-collectors, who were supposed to take care of during the match, authors of repeated and deliberate delays in the restart of the game.
What happened in the final minutes of Getafe–Elche: Hernández's decision
An absolute “premiere”, never seen before in a football field where sanctions by the referee are always directed at the direct protagonists: the players and the coaches (and their deputies). On the contrary, Alejandro Hernández Hernández, the referee of Getafe–Elche, entered the history of Spanish football in his own way – and not only – for a completely unprecedented decision, when he decided, in the last minutes of a match with high competitive tension, to issue a red card to the home team bench, punishing Enrique Mejuto González, a legend of Spanish football, with over 260 matches refereed in LaLiga and today a valued delegate of the club for his excellent relations with the world of refereeing.

Reasons for Mejuto González's expulsion: the ball boys were delaying the game
González's "fault" was one and was only revealed after the referee's report was submitted to the delegates of the Spanish Football Federation. No inappropriate or excessive words, no offensive or provocative attitudes: the direct red card came because the ball handlers on the touchline, under the direct control of the home team, were not carrying out their duties properly. On the contrary, they repeatedly became the protagonists of deliberate delays in handing over the ball and in the regular resumption of play. Surprise and shock on the Getafe bench and in the eyes of Mejuto González, who was thus forced to leave the field.
Who is Mejuto González, the former referee who was expelled?
The news made the rounds in Spain and sparked controversy not only for the at least strange choice of Hernández, justified with an equally unusual reason towards a former colleague, but also because Mejuto González has always been considered one of the best and most renowned referees in Iberian football: before becoming Getafe's delegate for relations with the category in 2019, he had refereed over 260 matches in the first division, and had also been a respected international referee where he also refereed Milan's sporting drama in the 2004-2005 Champions League with Liverpool's incredible comeback in Istanbul, which then won the Cup on penalties.
