The story of Szczesny's return to professional football is almost like a novel full of action and adventure, with the classic twist at the end. A few days after publicly announcing his farewell and the end of his career, he found himself forced to review every personal, family and professional plan. He returned to Barcelona as a starter, where he still plays today. A decision made out of passion and love for this sport, so much so that he agreed to play without winning anything in his first Catalan season. "What I got, I gave everything to Juventus."

Farewell to football and a return to playing for Barcelona

The events are now part of one of the strangest and most surprising stories in professional football. A champion who chooses to end his career because there is no more space at his last club, Juventus. This is how Szczesny has always explained his departure. As soon as he realized that he was no longer a central part of the project, he preferred to terminate his contract, retire and dedicate himself to himself and his family. But fate intervened. Ter Stegen's serious injury, Barcelona in search of an urgent replacement, the desperate proposal for Szczesny. He accepted immediately and today he is still a starter at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Szczesny and the Lewandowski story

Among the many anecdotes surrounding those days when he decided to change his life forever, there are still some unseen ones that the Polish goalkeeper likes to tell. He has never hidden that one of the main reasons why Barcelona contacted him was his great friendship with compatriot Robert Lewandowski, also at Barça:

"Three days before I officially announced my retirement, I told Lewy that I didn't want to play for any club anymore... except Barca," he told GQ Poland.

"And when they called me, they probably knew they could convince me very easily."

"I practically played for free"

This is how it happened: Szczesny immediately changed his mind, but only after consulting his family and relatives. He agreed to put on the gloves again and take a starting place at a prestigious club, an offer he himself called foolish to refuse. Not for money: “It wasn’t that I had lost my passion. I was simply not enthusiastic about the offers from some big clubs. It wasn’t about negotiating the price. I didn’t want to play just for the money.”

And so came the new revelation: at Barcelona he played a year almost for free. "Yes, it's true, my first season at Barcelona I played practically for free. What I got from the club was exactly the amount I had to pay back to Juventus for the early termination of my contract."

Contract termination and clause: how much he "owed" to Juventus

The departure from Juventus was unilateral: Szczesny would never agree to stay as the second goalkeeper behind the new acquisition, Di Gregorio. After 7 years at the club, 8 trophies won (3 championships, 3 Italian Cups, 2 Super Cups), in the summer of 2024 he announced the termination of his contract early. The contract was automatically renewed until June 2025.

No penalty, no veto from Juventus, but a "gentlemen's" agreement. The early termination included a clause of 2 million euros. An amount that Szczesny did not want to leave hanging and which was covered by his new salary at Barcelona, ????also 2 million euros per season.
