Capello: Inter have the best defenders in the world with the ball at their feet,
Fabio Capello

Inter have raised the bar and Fabio Capello has set the tone: the title and the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The former coach applauded the black and blues' transfer market, but above all, he has pushed the Italian champions to play in the Champions League with confidence, optimism and determination.

Last year, their playoff exit against Bodo was met with some regret. But this season, following the arrival of three players from the Premier League, the approach to the most exciting and rewarding (as well as lucrative) tournament will have to be different.

Capello, was Jones the player needed to complete the Inter team?

I would say so. Something was missing in midfield, something with a certain weight. Jones brings physicality and personality. On paper, everything is fine; the club has strengthened the squad well and this signing is the ideal reinforcement. Of course, we will have to wait until the player settles into the new team to fully evaluate him. But the feeling is positive.

The black and blue midfield now has many alternatives.

Yes, it's a complete and very strong unit. Zielinski, Sucic, and even Stankovic will be useful throughout the season: Chivu has a lot of talent, and not only in this field. Inter must convince themselves that he can be a key player in all competitions.

Inter are the clear favourites in the league. Is there at least one credible rival for the title?

Inter should have no rivals on paper: they just need to be careful not to get distracted in games that are supposed to be easy. Behind them, the team that is most ready, especially because they have not changed anything, is Roma. Napoli are on the same level as the yellow and reds, but it remains to be seen how well the group adapts to Allegri's demands.

Juve are doing well, we will see in time if they will be a worthy opponent, but they cannot be ruled out a priori. Milan need to be studied, but the new project is going well. Milan's season will depend on how Amorim gets into the minds of the players: that is the most important thing.

A strong team like Inter must have more ambition than last season in the Champions League. What is the minimum objective?

Quarterfinals. Then we know that a lot depends on the draw and moments of form, as well as episodes: the Champions League often escapes predictions for these reasons. However, Chivu has the opportunity to rotate and calibrate the energy of the main players so that they remain in good condition until May.

The attack is a guarantee: Lautaro is a true captain, Thuram is an excellent support, Pio and Bonny are invaluable. The only question mark is how they will react when they have to defend, but with the ball at their feet, Inter's defenders are the best in the world. The filter in midfield will be crucial. Calhanoglu needs to return to his best form, when he was among the three best in his position.

Which European teams are still ahead of Inter?

PSG is still there. Real Madrid will benefit from the psychological boost of Mourinho's return. Barcelona will regain balance with Rodri. Watch out for Bayern and Arsenal too. But Inter's real problem will be adapting to the high tempo of Champions League matches, because that doesn't happen in Italy.

And speaking of which: I hope to see a different approach from the referees in Serie A, who don't have to record every contact or intervene when a player falls to the ground. The refereeing style should be the one seen in the World Cup, also to accustom our teams to the pace of Europe.

Will Italian teams do better in European competitions?

Inter have everything they need to achieve great results. But I expect great things from Juve and Milan in the Europa League. In fact, I'll go further: I expect an Italian final, if the draw allows. Their main objective this year should be that trophy.
