Mourinho admits: Rodri would have been the icing on the cake for Real Madrid

Real Madrid coach José Mourinho has admitted that he would have liked to have midfielder Rodri Hernández in his squad, who chose to move to Barcelona this summer.

In the press conference before the league debut against Espanyol, Mourinho was asked if Real Madrid needed reinforcements in midfield. The Portuguese initially stressed that the team has no problems in this department, but then admitted that Rodri would have been an ideal reinforcement.

"I don't think we have a shortage in midfield. Then you can ask me: if we don't have a shortage, why did you want to take Rodri? Rodri would have been the icing on the cake. He is a great player, with a lot of experience and a great status. If you can have him, then let's have him and let's improve," Mourinho declared.

The Real Madrid coach made it clear that he is currently happy with the options available to him. He mentioned Tchouaméni, Camavinga, Valverde, Bernardo and Arda Güler, emphasizing that the Turk could also be activated in the midfield positions.

Real Madrid had attempted to secure Rodri's services this summer, but the Spanish midfielder chose Barcelona's offer and has now been introduced as a player of the Catalan club.

Mourinho's words thus confirm that Rodri was one of Real Madrid's big targets, although the Portuguese coach does not seem to be looking for another reinforcement in the midfield before the transfer window closes.
