The incredible story of the worst striker in history

He didn't need to be a phenomenon to go down in football history. Ali Dia, the Senegalese striker who celebrates his 61st birthday today, became famous for one of the most incredible stories in modern football.

His career began in 1988, in the lower divisions of French football. But in the 1990s, Dia decided to use an unusual "strategy" to advance: he pretended to be the cousin of Ballon d'Or winner George Weah.

At a time when the internet didn't exist and verifying information was much more difficult, the scam worked. A friend of Dia's called Premier League clubs, introducing himself as Weah, and recommended his "talented cousin," who allegedly played for PSG and had 13 caps for Senegal.

Southampton in the trap

Harry Redknapp, then manager of West Ham, was immediately suspicious of the story. But Graeme Souness, manager of Southampton, did not have the same reaction. He offered Dia a one-month contract.

Souness initially wanted to try him out in a friendly, but the match against Arsenal's reserves was called off due to rain. So Dia signed without playing a single minute of the trial.

In the first few training sessions, the deception began to be revealed. Dia had obvious technical problems and could barely participate in basic exercises with his teammates. However, luck continued to help him.

The debut that lasted 53 minutes

Due to a number of injuries in the offensive department, Dia was activated in the Southampton-Leeds match in the Premier League. In the 32nd minute, he entered the field instead of one of the club's icons, Matt Le Tissier. But the adventure lasted only 53 minutes.

Dia made some obvious mistakes, his movements were erratic and he tried to avoid contact with the ball as much as possible. Souness replaced him in the 85th minute, ending the game without a striker on the pitch.

Years later, Le Tissier described that performance in brutal terms, saying that Dia looked like he had won a competition to play for Southampton and likened his movement to "Bambi on ice".

The contract was terminated a day later.

The following day, Southampton terminated Dia's contract. He left and a year later ended his football career with Gateshead, in the English fifth tier. That season he scored two goals in eight games, statistics that also constituted the best period of his career.

In total, his "adventure" in the Premier League lasted only 53 minutes, but it was enough to turn Ali Dia into a lifelong character in English football.

After football, another life

Ironically, after leaving football, Dia seems to have found his true talent: studies.

In 2001, he graduated from Newcastle Business School at Northumbria University and then received a master's degree in business administration from San Francisco State University.

He later moved to Doha, Qatar, where he is said to still live today under the name Aly Dia, which he changed after his adventure in football. Although his sporting career was almost negligible, the name Ali Dia remained in history.

Not for the goals, the trophies or the talent, but for a trick that took him from the lower categories to the Premier League and gave him just 53 minutes of immortal fame.
