Former Dutch National Team player David Mendes da Silva has been sentenced to 7 years in prison for drug trafficking. He was found guilty of importing two loads of cocaine weighing 74 and 105 kilograms.

Mendes da Silva was found not guilty of the charge of complicity in the importation of a package of cocaine weighing 1,300 kilograms. He was convicted for the preparation of the import in that case, where the shipment in question was seized by the customs officials.

Mendes da Silva was found to have bribed a shipping official, revealing the location of the container housing the cocaine shipment. Da Silva received a payment of €50,000 for providing that information, with the employee in question receiving €100,000.

In addition to helping to import drugs into the Netherlands, Mendes da Silva has also been found guilty of selling them. He was arrested on his 40th birthday in August 2022 as part of a wide-ranging drug importation investigation.

During his time as a professional footballer, Mendes da Silva played for Sparta Rotterdam, Ajax, NAC Breda, AZ, Red Bull Salzburg and Panathinaikos and defended the orange colors 7 times with the Dutch national team.
