The former Albanian Prime Minister of the Kosovo War, Pandeli Majko, has called today's verdict by the Hague Tribunal a dramatic decision that does not change history.
Without hiding his emotions, he describes the decision as an extraordinary human drama and expresses concern about how, in his opinion, it could affect the historical perception of the Kosovo war.
"I want to say that, although I hear that the KLA came out clean, I have a feeling of pessimism. There are times when they try to distort our history. You can't say that the KLA came out of this history clean, that it came out immaculate.
"It is a historical fact that the KLA were either killed or punished. This is a drama and its depth must be appreciated," he told Top Channel.
Majko says that at this moment, Kosovo and Albania must show a dignified stance and avoid clashes with justice.
He also recalls the emotional reactions after the decision, saying that the human drama of this process cannot be overlooked.
"This dramatic decision of The Hague made it clear to us that Kosovo is nothing but Albania and Albania is nothing but Kosovo. Today everyone has seen people crying, children and former KLA soldiers."
"The drama from a human point of view is extraordinary. There is no need to cry, but to have a dignified attitude. He who curses a court decision is not strong. Any anger towards it seems to me weakness," said Majko.
For Majko, the legal battle is not over. He emphasizes that the appeal process now remains and demands that the decision be seen beyond the individual fate of the convicts.
"Now there is also the Appeal and I think that Kosovo and Albania should evaluate this not as a personal act, but as an act that has affected us all. In war it is very difficult to separate a personal act from a collective act," he said.
The Special Court was established in 2015 by a decision of the Kosovo Assembly, following constitutional amendments and agreements with the European Union. For the former Albanian Prime Minister, accepting this court was a price that Kosovo chose to pay on its path towards international consolidation.
"The way this decision was formed was like a prize. I think the act of creating this court required a certain bravery and, ultimately, no one can accuse from an international point of view or history."
"This decision was made because the Albanian subconscious is aware that everything is paid for either with murder or imprisonment. They did not disappoint us," says Majko.
But for Majko, today's decision also has a personal dimension. During the Kosovo war, he was the prime minister of Albania and Hashim Thaçi was one of the leaders of the KLA and part of the Kosovo delegation in Rambouillet.
"Hashim Thaçi is the leader of the Rambouillet delegation that made Kosovo a subject of international rights for the first time. Hashim was a fighter, he was a leader. I am proud to have had him and will have him as a friend. Now I will have him even more as a friend," said former Prime Minister Majko.
