As the court hearing for Mayor Erion Veliaj will be held tomorrow, his lawyer, Plarent Ndreca, addressed this issue on "Top Story".
He stated that there is no evidence against Veliaj, adding that the Constitutional Court is drawing the attention of the Supreme Court.
"We await what the Constitutional Court has justified the last decision. We await what has been clearly stated by this court, the first was his mandate, the reconfirmation as mayor, and the second where her decision was repealed. This extreme measure, the most extreme measure (prison sentence), mandate given in 2023 by the citizens of Tirana, what we await is the release, or the lifting of the extreme measure, the Constitutional Court has said in this reasoning to the High Court.
In conditions where the investigation has been completed for a year, where every criterion for imposing security measures has been met, Veliaj has no legal justification to keep him in this security measure, it is the only case in Albania.
The Court has the obligation to balance every constitutional interest, the direction of Tirana is linked to the costing principles. As the Constitutional Court says, what also draws the attention of the Supreme Court is that you must now balance the right of the mayor. This is also stated by the Venice Commission.
"There is no evidence, no doubt, that Veliaj intimidated. These are not hypothetical, says the Constitutional Court. This is not a criterion for Veliaj, but for every citizen of the republic ," said Ndreca.
