The EU Enlargement Commissioner has lobbied in Copenhagen, Berlin and Paris to accelerate the accession of Balkan states to the EU.
In an interview with German TV WELT, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said that there is a real possibility that Albania will join by 2030.
"I can understand the frustration in the Western Balkans very well. I come from this area. I'll give you a comparison. If Ukraine had to wait as long as North Macedonia, we would start negotiations with Ukraine in 2045. And that can't happen. This also applies to the Western Balkan countries. We have Montenegro and Albania, which are doing very well with integration reforms. They understand the enlargement process as a transformation of their economy, including other areas of life. If things continue to go well, we could complete all negotiation chapters with Montenegro by the end of 2026 and then with Albania by the end of 2027. This means that there is a real possibility that both of these countries will become our new members by 2030 ," said EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos.
Kos appreciates the German-Slovenian proposal to abolish unanimity for decision-making in the EU accession of new states.
"The final decisions belong to the European Council, but Germany, together with Slovenia, has made a proposal to simplify the rules by qualified majority. It is up to the member states to decide how to continue the process, once we have completed the negotiations from a technical point of view. We have promised the candidate states that they will one day become full members of the EU. When they move in the right direction and fulfill the conditions set, we must show that we are serious with them," Kos said.
When it comes to Ukraine, Kos referred to the World Bank, which predicts that its reconstruction will require more than 500 billion Euros, so the European Union cannot manage it alone without the help of the US.
