The opening of negotiations for Albania and North Macedonia serves the stability of the entire European continent.

This is the joint statement of the Head of Foreign Policy in the EU, Josep Borrell, and the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.

"At this critical moment in European history, marked by the unjustified aggression committed by Russia against Ukraine, advancing the path of Albania and North Macedonia to the European Union is the key to strengthening the cohesion and stability of the entire European continent."

The statement underlines that the European Union and the United States of America welcome a compromise proposal that takes into account the interests and concerns of North Macedonia and Bulgaria based on mutual respect, trust and understanding.

"The sovereign decision of the Assembly of North Macedonia will be important to move forward. This spirit of constructive compromise on which European integration is built must continue to inspire all those involved in this historic process".

The two chief diplomats say in their statement that the European Union and the United States are committed to closer cooperation in the Western Balkans, as ensuring stability and prosperity and realizing their European and Euro-Atlantic future remains our common goal.
