NATO Summit, Rama: The Western Balkans needs stability and focus
Prime Minister Edi Rama

Prime Minister Edi Rama announces that Albania will increase defense spending to 2%, until 2024, as he says that he is looking forward to the NATO summit that will start on July 11 in Vilnius, Lithuania.

In a reaction on social networks, Rama says that Albania will reaffirm its commitment to NATO, and its support for the "just" war of the Ukrainian people. Rama also mentions the Western Balkans, saying that it needs stability and focus.

Rama's full reaction:

We look forward to the crucial NATO summit in Vilnius. In Vilnius, we will reaffirm Albania's unwavering commitment to NATO, the security of our allies on the eastern flank, the righteous struggle of the Ukrainian people, and the very need for stability and focus in the Western Balkans.

In the last decade, Albania has increased defense spending from 1.35% to 1.76% of our GDP. However, at times like this, more is needed. Therefore, I tasked the Ministry of Defense to achieve the 2% target by 2024. Although we are not among the wealthy members of NATO, we believe that the 2% target is the floor and not the ceiling of our commitment. In Vilnius, Albania will present its willingness to engage further. We will also announce that, if necessary, Albania is ready to commit additional troops to strengthen NATO's forward presence.

Together we are stronger and only together we can prevail in this very defining moment for what we believe; for the sake of generations to come
