Rama reveals "very difficult" relations with the Netherlands: How a football match changed his perception of Albania

Prime Minister Edi Rama, also the chairman of the Socialist Party, during a conversation with young people at RinCamp 2026 in Jalë, focused on Albania's European integration process, describing it as a complex process that includes technical, political and geopolitical challenges.

Rama said that membership in the European Union is not limited to meeting the conditions, but requires the approximation of thousands of legal and sub-legal acts with European legislation, as well as their implementation in practice.

According to him, Albania has managed to significantly accelerate the process of transposing legislation thanks to the use of artificial intelligence.

"This is a complex process that is talked about a lot but in fact very few know the process from the inside. This is a process that has a complexity of a technical nature, that has a complexity of a political and geopolitical nature."

The head of government emphasized that "it is a process when we say technical, I am not talking about fulfilling the conditions that you must meet to advance and become a member country."

"This means that in all areas you have to meet the standards. The process means that Albania must include in its body of laws about 4,000 legal and sub-legal acts related to the process."

Rama emphasized that "it took Croatia 7 years, we created the AI ??model with Diella and actually accelerated the transposition exponentially, we did the transposition in a very short time with 99% accuracy."

"You can do all this and pass the acts through the legislative path, but still this is not enough because you have to implement them. You can implement the laws, but it is not enough, 27 member states need to agree to take the next step. That family functions by consensus," said Rama.

The Prime Minister also said that Albania has faced several political obstacles in the integration process, emphasizing that the opening of negotiations has been rejected three times by several member states.

He also focused on relations with the Netherlands, which he described as among the most difficult in relation to the European Union, adding that organizing the Conference League final in Tirana had a positive impact on changing the perception of Albania.

"We have generally encountered this from large countries that were not ready to take the process forward. They have refused to open negotiations 3 times. Our relations with the Netherlands were the most difficult relations we had with the EU, how a football match turned the wheel of history of relations with the Netherlands. The Conference League final in Tirana, Roma-Feyenoord. Rama announced that he will travel to Paris at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron for the July 14 celebrations and then to Brussels, where, according to him, the phase of closing the negotiation chapters will begin.

"I will go to Paris because we are invited by Macron for July 14 and then to Brussels where we will start closing the chapters. We opened all the chapters in record time and now we will start closing them. We will close the first three chapters on July 14, this is trust and control," Rama said.
