Rama: If I believed what was said about Zvërnec, I would be in protest

Speaking at a meeting in Jalë with young people, mainly from North Macedonia, organized at the former LSI camp, Prime Minister Edi Rama said that the construction of the luxury resort in Zvërnec will bring great benefits to the Albanian economy. Among other things, Rama said that disinformation has dealt a major blow to tourism this month, clearly harming businesses.

"If I believed what was said about Zvërnec, not only would I have gone out to protest, but I would still be there. What was said was terrible, but fortunately untrue. What is most difficult at this time is how to deal with the truth, how to inform people better and not be left out of the process. The cost is high. For such a large amount of misinformation, there is such a large cost. We had another high increase in tourism in May, we did not have June. If we look at the trend from January, it should have been a boom. We have had endless cancellations. In the name of Albania, Albanians have been hit. The work of people who have been waiting all winter for this time to come has been hit. Why? For reasons that are much more complex than Zvërnec.

If all traitors were like my work, Albania would need more traitors. All my efforts, with all the flaws and mistakes, since I started dealing with politics, have been connected to beauty, to the physical transformation of spaces, because I strongly believe that beauty has an invaluable impact on the entire value chain. There are beautiful poor places. If you find me an ugly and rich place, show me. There is no wealth in ugliness. I am talking about the community, I am not talking about criminals. In ugliness there is only crime, scum and people who survive.

My entire history in office speaks of a continuous effort to make things more beautiful. I was watching that we are making a short film about what we have done for nature. Many of the things are unknown. We have planted 5 million trees. We have built an entire system of protected areas. We have done them. We have made the first law for them. We have canceled over 40 hydropower plants, with permits previously granted in the Vjosa riverbed. We have canceled nine hydropower plants in Valbona.

Canceling all these hydropower plants is not like canceling a few tenders. It is going against big financial interests. How can I be the man who concretes Zvërnec? The truth is that I believe that we are at a stage where we can go much higher, or we can go lower. We need to move to another category of consumer. We need to ask that those who spend a lot come here.

The idea that these large tourist resorts are for those who come, not for us, is idiotic. They bring much more income to our economy. They do not come to the Moon. They come to a place where, first of all, people will be employed here. Filipinos will also be taken, if you do not want to go to work. Today, where we are, there are no lower salaries than in Greece. Will they bring bread with them? No. They will consume the products that are produced here. That resort is a processing factory for products from the area and beyond. A book was taken and went to the Prosecutor's Office. That book is with the projects of foreign architects in Albania. They are projects of Albanian investors who want to build.

I saw some palaces being built by the unstoppable mayor of Kavaja. Level zero. This is a school in nature for all Albanian architects, to learn to collaborate with great masters and tomorrow become great names themselves. Attacking a project that has not yet been done is an inquisition. We cannot do a project that the European Union does not accept, or we should say that we will not join the EU", said Rama.
