"Let's not humble ourselves before Albania"/ Mitsotakis reveals
Mitsotakis presenting the candidates for MEPs

In a meeting that took place on Sunday in the building of the Prime Minister in Athens, in the presence of two Ministers of State, Makis Voridis and Aki Skertsou, government representative Pavlos Marinakis, close associates of the Prime Minister Thanasis Nezis and Alexis Patelis, the final decision was taken from the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself regarding the future of Fredi Beleri, writes "Kathimerini".

The reality is that the prime minister had heard conflicting opinions on the matter in the past, but had not made any final decision. He was just analyzing them. "Kathimerini" emphasizes that Sunday was decisive, as all points of view were again presented with arguments for and against.

The other media, "Protothema", writes that Fredi Beleri's son also went to the prime minister's office the day before, and had "an emotional meeting" with Greek officials.

Despite this, the media in Athens report that the choice was not easy, as within the New Democracy there were strong voices against his candidacy.

However, Kathimerini confirms that among the three reasons that prompted Mitsotakis to put Beler's name on the list, they had nothing to do with the judicial process, but are simply being used for political points.

"First , the prime minister considered that his non-involvement would send a wrong message, as surrender to Albania.

Second, in Sunday's meeting, the numbers showed strong support for Fredi Beller, coming in third among the favorites.

Finally, the political pressure that would follow from the extreme right against the New Democracy could not be excluded", writes Kathimerini.

The Greek newspaper further adds that immediately after the officialization of the candidacy, Fredi Beleri, through a message recorded from a prison in Albania, said that "the battle he was fighting was not personal, but it is a battle for the rule of law and democracy".

"It is a battle for the values defended by the West and Europe, which must be respected by those who want to join the great European family. It is also a battle for the most suffering part of Hellenism, the Greek minority of Albania, which is being treated unfairly ", says Fredi Beleri.

During the presentation of the candidates for the European elections, the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, said that this list includes people from every corner of Greece, forgetting that Fredi Beleri comes from Himara, an Albanian land.

Alfred Beleri was arrested in last year's local election campaign for electoral corruption. From prison he was elected mayor of Himara, but Albanian justice did not allow him to take the oath as he was under arrest.

He is currently sentenced to two years in prison by a court decision of the first instance. He continues to be the chosen one of Himara until there is a final decision from the appeal court.
