"The Party of Freedom will be baptized as the Party of Referendums very soon" This is what Ilir Meta wrote the other day about his party that, after being "undressed" from the President's suit, changed its name, but with the same building and people.
The word "Referendum" has not been missing from any of his speeches since the last days as head of state and until today. He even strongly emphasized this topic a year ago that he would hold a referendum for the protection of the Constitution, but this, like many of his other words (such as that he would resign if Rama won the election) was not kept.
Meta declares every day that he will hold a Referendum, but for what he has not declared until today.
When he was President, Meta claimed that he would hold the Referendum with the signatures of 50,000 citizens, which should first be taken to the CEC and then accepted by the Constitutional Court.
Now, it is up to Meta to do it at the request of 1/5 of the deputies, and he can do this only with the help of Berisha, by donating some of his deputies' signatures.
But Albania does not have a good history with "direct democracy". The last referendum was held in October 1998 for the amendment of the Constitution of the Republic.
At that time, Sali Berisha and Ilir Meta were political "enemies" and Berisha at that time accused Meta of being the author of the theft and manipulation of the referendum. Will Berisha cooperate today to hold a referendum with someone who once accused him of manipulating referendums?
The history of referendums in Albania
In our country, a total of three broad popular consultations were held, the constitutional referendums in 1994 and the one in 1998, as well as the referendum on the choice of the governing system, held in 1997.
The 1994 constitutional referendum
Referendumi Kushtetues i vitit 1998
